I just returned from my brother’s marriage. It got me thinking about the sea of change taking place in the way people think about it. I dont think my parents were allowed to really “think” about it. There parents decided them for each other, though considering some of their interests. Today its my brother who calls the shots. I guess my parents generation was more the “chioceless” one as they couldnt decide on their marriage neither on their childrens. I see this happen amongst many families which I call the proper second generation Indians after Independence.
I do consider this as a natural course in social evolution. The maturity of thought is increasing and the age to become balanced in thinking is also decreasing with every generation. I believe the reason behind it is improvement in delivery of education and improvement in standard of living.
Now I wonder what will happen to the generation after me. Would there be livins happenning more often?. The west leads us in this aspect but will the east follow it or would the eastern mindset and culture show a new path and redefine marriages.
This has been sticking on my mind from sometime now. A normal geek/nerd’s reaction to “manager” term is quite amusing. I have heard from my friends stereotype a manager invariably as a guy who uses a spreadsheet preferably using the M$ excel. You get an opinion that managers are “manipulators”. Not surprisingly I held that not quite long ago :-).
How could I then join the “league” ? I think it has to do with the horizons you are exposed to. If the set of problems that you deal in is restricted to something specific like coding and your world revolves around computers you end up creating algorithms for your relationships and your tea. So the key is relationships. My real definition of a manager is rooted here. A manager does the “managing act” or the “balancing act” which has to deal with a result that is not_only to do with successfully getting things implemented but also successfully keeping the team happy, the cost and timelines under control. So sometimes the “balancing act” can create an impression of “manipulation”.
The above explaination may not entirely be true since I have know “Managers” who get somewhere only by manipulation….
